What Causes Elevated Blood Pressure Levels?

I m a woman of 67 years. I ve been taking BP meds for years. Lately its been even higher. Tonight it read 164/97. I ve been taking Metoprolol 25 mg a day --- 1/2 in the am and 1/2 at night. But I just took another half when I got this read. Is my BP too high? Was that ok to take another half of Metoprolol? (another 12 mg - in all 37 mg today.) I ve never done that before and am concerned I may have taken too much HBP meds.

Hello, Thanks for the query.
BP reading of 164/97 mm Hg is high for any age. Even at your age it always good to maintain it around 130 / 80 mm Hg.
By taking an additional dose of 1/2 metoprolol tablet there is not going to be any harm. However, if your BP reading continues to remain as high as reported, then it is better to add a drug like Losartan 25 mg or Telmisartan 20 mg. Which will help in better control of BP. Only metoprolol may not help. Thanks
