What Causes Elevated TSH Levels?

Hello My GP in New Zealand has very recently asked me to have a blood test to test my TSH levels as, apparently, I was considered borderline for raised TSH level at my previous routine general blood test in December last year, but was not contacted regarding this and have not been prescribed Thyroxine. Following a blood test on 8 June 2017 my TSH level is 4.5. The range at the Lab Test clinic I attended is 0.5 - 4.0 and again my GP has not requested to seem me. Do I need to be concerned about this? I have been wondering if there are any foods that would be particularly good for me or any foods aht I should definitely avoid. I would really appreciate your comments. Thank you Alison

Hi,

TSH is a test which is used for screening of thyroid problems which if comes elevated or depressed, need further investigations and history taking.

High TSH is suggestive of hypothyroidism which is decreased activity of the thyroid gland but need be to confirm by doing Free T3, free T4 levels.

Your levels aren't that much high but it is advised to T3, T4 levels to see if it needs to be treated, after consulting your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
