What Causes Elevated GGT And AST Levels?

does metformin raise GGT and AST levels? I was on insulin while pregnant for type 2. Prior to pregnancy, i had liver function tests that were also high GGT, AST and ALP but once on insulin my levels normalized. They recently put me on Metformin at 6 months postpartum and I just had liver panel done and GGT is 175. Would Metformin cause that?

Metformin is a very safe and well tolerated drug.
Metformin is not considered intrinsically hepatotoxic. In fact, metformin may be beneficial in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and chronic hepatitis C. Metformin is only contraindicated in patients with advanced cirrhosis because it heightens the risk of developing lactic acidosis .
From this it is clear that it does not affect liver enzymes. You may have to look if there are other causes involved in raising those enzyme levels. Thanks.
