What Causes Elevated AST And ALT Levels After Chelation Therapy?

Following 20 rounds of weekly iv chelation therapy ( edta and dmps) 7 years ago creatinine rose from .88 pre chelation baseline to 1.27 currently and ast and alt have continued to rise from pre chelation baseline 21 and 36 to current 44 and 82. Also, 7 mg abilify has been used daily for the past 7 years. Recent liver ultrasound indicated fatty liver. I am male, 25 years old, height 71 inches and weight 240. How concerning are these test results and is the kidney / liver damage reversible ? Is the problem likely stemming from the chelation or the ability?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

You have rightly observed that your creatinine levels along with your liver enzyme levels are significantly up than your pre chelation levels. Chelation can cause kidney damage leading to dialysis.

Liver damage may also be seen with some agents. But in your case, I would like to add, things are still manageable.

Both creatinine and liver enzymes (AST, ALT) are moderately increased.

You can talk to your doctor for dose adjustments.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Prabhash Verma, General & Family Physician
