What Causes Elevated ALT Levels?

Philip Breakwell - male 54 - triathlete - recently diagnosed with GMB Higher Grade - no side effects at all from chemo - still running - on stric ketogenic diet. My question is that my ALT (SGPT) bloodwork went from a 23 to a 49 in two weeks. Any reason for alarm?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Chemotherapy could cause mild liver dysfunction, which may not be that alarming at this stage. Hence, ALT levels could increase marginally.

You need to do a regular follow-up of the same until the completion of treatment. If it shows an increasing trend or you become symptomatic by expression of jaundice, then you may need an ultrasound scan followed by appropriate intervention.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ashakiran S,
