What Causes Edema In The Legs After A Weight Loss Surgery?

My mother went through weight loss surgery almost a year ago and has lost over 100lbs. She is now no longer a diabetic however her legs are holding a lot of water despite taking Lasik’s. Her legs are very tight and indents when pushed. She fell about a week ago and I treated it with only cleaning it and putting a band-aid over it. Her legs are now worse and have turned into multiple sores and seem to be leaking a clear fluid on her right shin pretty much is her whole right shin is leaking. I’m very concerned her father died from diabetes after they had to take one of his legs. It’s almost Christmas and I don’t know what to do.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Based on your description, it appears that your mother could be having ventricular dysfunction. She needs cardiac evaluation to be done for which you need to consult Cardiologist. Multiple sites what she is having could be have developed due to injury and overstretching of skin in the legs, due to collection of fluids. It needs to taken care by doing proper wound dressing and allowing it to heal. If in case her cardiac evaluation is normal, then she could be hypoproteinemic, for which she needs to be evaluated. You may consult Physician in this regard for clinical evaluation and appropriate management.

Hope the information provided helps.
All the best.
