What Causes Dryness, Swelling And Peeling Skin On Lips?

Sure. My daughter is having concerns about her significantly dry lips. She says they are swollen and uncomfortable, but this does not seem related to allergies or eating anything. She says she wakes up in the a.m. with her lips a bit swollen and skin peeling. She's tried all kinds of ointments, nothing works.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query your daughter have symptoms of dryness, swelling and peeling skin on lips which seems to be due to allergic reaction, dehydration and it could be due to excessive lip biting as well.

I would suggest you to :-

- Give cold compresses to affected area 2-3 times a day .

- Drink plenty of fluid , drink at least 8 glasses of water in a day .

- Do not touch the affected area with your hands as it can aggravate condition.

Take over the counter antihistamine drug like benadryl or zyrtec. If condition doesn't get better in a day then consult dermatologist for proper examination and to rule out other cause like trauma , angioedema or pimple. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics and steroid ointment. If the allergic reaction is severe then doctor may give adrenaline short .

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain excessive dry, swollen and peeling lips can be due to a condition known as Exfoliative Chelitis..
Exfoliative Chelitis is a condition in which there is continuous peeling of the lips leading to appearance of dry, damaged and flaky lips..
It commonly occurs due to habit like lip biting, lip licking, lip sucking etc..
Other causes can be mouth breathing, bacterial and fungal infection..
You should consult a Dermatologist and get evaluated and he can do a clinical evaluation and investigations like microscopic examination of scraping from the lips can help in diagnosis..
In case of Exfoliative Chelitis you can be advised to apply a thick coat of Petroleum jelly over the lips.. You can also apply beeswax containing lip balm frequently throughout the day..
You can also apply Tacrolimus and Marigold containing ointments..
You should avoid licking, sucking or biting the lips.. Drink plenty of water. In case of Bacterial or Fungal infection antibiotics or antifungal medicines can be given accordingly...

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
