What Causes Dryness And Redness On The Vagina?

Hi. I think that I have either a yest infection or BV. My vagina is very dry, red, and when I urinate there is a stinging pain. There isn t a smell, and little to no discharge. I didn t want to go to the store and waste money on treatments for a yest infection if it s BV.

Hello,

A vaginal yeast infection typically has white, thick discharge with itching, while BV has thin discharge with an odor, so it isn't obvious that you have either one of these. One possibility, especially if you are post-menopause, would be atrophic vaginitis, which is due to dryness and atrophy of the skin. For this, you could try using moisturizers and lubricants first to see if that helps. For atrophic vaginitis, topical estrogen is also used and would need to be prescribed.

Otherwise, it would be reasonable to try a treatment for a yeast infection to see if that helps, such as with clotrimazole cream. If that doesn't help, you will probably need an exam to figure out the cause and get you started on the right treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
