What Causes Dry Mouth And Difficulty In Swallowing?

I have an excessively dry mouth / throat when I swallow..... I am at the tail end of post nasal drip and I took a Claritin 5mg 1-2 hrs ago. Can I do anything to create moisture when I swallow besides drinking water and sucking on cough drops?
No cough & no sore throat (just dry)

Hi,

As per your complain dry mouth or Xerostomia can be due to causes like:

- Severe dehydration
- Side effects of medications if you take any
- Salivary gland dysfunction
- Nerve damage supplying salivary glands
- Oral infections like thrush
- Sjogren's Syndrome
- For dry mouth chew sugarfree chewing gums
- Drink plenty of water
- Avoid regular mouthwash and use specialized mouthwash that are formulated for dry mouth patients like Biotene.
- You can also instil artificial saliva drops
- Suck tart candies as it also stimulates saliva flow

If does not improve consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated.

Hope this information helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks and regards,
