What Causes Dizziness And Nausea Along With Pain Above The Ear?
I have a 73 y/o female friend who returned from a trip to Ireland last Tuesday. She became very ill on the 9 hour flight home with dizziness and nausea. Since returning home, she has headache above one ear, shooting pain occassionally in ear and nose accompanied now by diarrhea. Her visit to primary care physician did not help. He looked only at one ear. She also has several episodes each day of sweating. She has a history of vertigo occassionally and sinus issues. She is taking meclazine and requested steroids and is awaiting RX. The diarrhea began several days after her return. Any ideas for further workup?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
The shooting nature of the pain may imply it may be related to the nerves in the area. Nerve related pain, called neuralgia, can be temporary or permanent and there are different possible causes.
The diarrhea is likely due to a viral or bacterial infection of the gastrointestinal tract. In most persons, it resolves on its own with minimal invention but other persons may need intervention.
Replacing fluid and electrolytes and using probiotics, may help reduce your symptoms.
I hope this helps.
