What Causes Dizziness And Lightheadedness With The History Of PRK Laser Eye Surgery?

I have had dizzy and lightheaded spells last week. I had PRK eye surgery done a month ago. My vision is pretty good right now but I have been extremely busy at work. I stare at the computer screen all day. I make sure to stay hydrated so I don t think dehydration is the issue.I am a 30 year old female.

Hello,

In my opinion, your dizziness may not be related to PRK laser eye surgery done a month ago. The following are few probable causes of dizziness or lightheadedness:
1) Vertigo
2) Cervical spondylitis
3) Severe anemia
4) Postural hypotension or decrease in blood pressure when you stand up from sitting or lying down position
5) Low blood sugar or hypoglycemia
6) Heat exhaustion
7) A viral infection of vestibular nerve which helps in balancing
8) Migraine
9) Certain medications like antidepressants, sedatives, blood pressure lowering medications
10) Anxiety disorders
11) In rare cases, heart conditions like cardiomyopathy

If the dizziness spells are associated with any of the below symptoms, you need to consult a physician as early as possible:
- Sudden, severe headache
- Chest pain
- Difficulty breathing
- Numbness or paralysis of arms or legs
- Double vision
- Rapid or irregular heartbeat
- Confusion or slurred speech
- Stumbling or difficulty walking
- Ongoing vomiting
- Seizures
- A sudden change in hearing
- Facial numbness or weakness

If any of the above is not present, it can be considered as mild dizziness and causes mentioned above are to be ruled out. It's better if you can meet a neurologist and discuss your problem.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
