What Causes Discomfort In Throat?

Hi. I am 47 years old and my I m having an uncomfortable feeling in my throat. I went to another doctor and he said that it was my epiglottis. He also mentioned that my epiglottis will eventually go back inside but it s not doing that and the uncomfortable feeling still remains. What do I do?

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi, epiglottis has a natural position in throat which does not change. Only thing is if there is some inflammation in the epiglottis (epiglottitis), it becomes swollen and may appear to have changed in position. But epiglottitis usually presents with pain throat, difficulty in breathing and foul breath. So it is unlikely that your epiglottis has changed position grossly and will return to normal position afterwards. It usually is that because of throat discomfort, one observes the throat in mirror and visualizes epiglottis and becomes worried about it. Just do steam inhalation along with antiseptic gargles and an analgesic. A proton pump inhibitor can also be taken along with in case some reflux is there. Still if your problem persists, please see an ENT and get a complete throat examination done. Regards
