What Causes Discomfort In The Eyes?

for the last few days my eyes feel like they have sand under my eye lids and in the corners. I have not been reading more than usual and I have tried to give them a break by not over straining them by wearing my glasses or reading excessively. I have been using eye drops to try and rinse them but nothing helps.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The two most common causes of your symptoms are dry eye and allergic conjuctivitis.
In this case you may try some eye drops with an antihistamine like ketotifen eye drops twice a day in each eye.
Another option is to use artificial tears several times a day, you can use these in between the ketotifen eye drops to keep you eyes lubricated.

If your eyes are not improving or you notice yellow secretions, vision changes or you feel pain in the eyes please see your doctor soon.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Kind regards,
Antoneta Zotaj, MD
