What Causes Discomfort In Abdomen While Passing Stools?

Hi, I keep getting a really bad pain in my lower left hand side of my stomach and back. I have had scans on my overies etc as it felt like the pain was in this area to begin with and the scans and examination were all normal, now the pain is more higher and in my back too. Also I am very regular on passing stools (always once a day and most times more) and have been for some years since I got salmonella when I was in my early twenties (am now in my forties) but I have noticed a discomfort in the left hand side of my stomach when passing stools like an ache like it did today but I have now got this really bad pain back which is like a pain and an ache in the areas I mentioned above. Could I have IBS? As I also notice that certain foods and stress does tend to upset my stomach really badly and cause cramps which are usually in the middle of my stomach not on just one side. The pain only usually lasts about a day and then goes for sometimes days or weeks. I do have a underactive thyroid problem and also pernicious anaemia. I am also extremely tired lately, more so than normal but my weight has stayed the same apart from feeling bloated a lot lately too. Many thanks for your help with this, it is much appreciated.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,
Noted your history and understood the concerns.

Some of hte history like pain in abdomen on stress and certain foods go with the diagnosis of IBS. IBS means irritable bowel syndrome and the commonest cause is stress and anxiety.
One can have allergy to certain foods, particularly in persons having IBS, acting as instigating or enhancing factors.
But the pain on left side along with back ache on the same side while passing stool indicates that this may be due to colitis.
Hence I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Get a clinical evaluation by a Gastroenterologist.
Colonoscopy and biopsy.
Tests of stool, blood and urine.
CT scan of abdomen and back.
All this will lead to a certain diagnosis and if any specific cause is found you can be treated accordingly.
If all the investigations are normal then this can be treated as IBS and then the control of stress and anxiety is the mainstay along with avoids of all the foods, factors and beverages that instigate or enhance the problems.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant,
General Surgeon
