What Causes Difficulty Standing And Walking On Heels?

Can t remember an exact date, but within the past 10 days to two weeks, I ve noticed issues with my gait in my left leg. This is a leg on which I had a TKR in July, 2007. Dorsiflexion is weak. And I cannot really stand on my left heel nor really walk just on my heels. Treatment so far is via my chiropractor as the issues came with lower left back pain/left gluteal pain. We are trying to see if something may be keeping a nerve from firing. Did some electric stim treatment today and will tray some massaging to see if the cause could be muscular. Another friend suggested I see a physiatrist. On my own I am using weights to try to strengthen my dorsiflexion. It was in spending time today online that I learned about the heel and was amazed that leaning on my kitchen counter to balance, I was unable to stand on my left heel. I am 64 and will turn 65 on 4-17-2015. With my current medical coverage having a $6k deductible, I am hoping to wait it out until Medicare kicks in. Your thoughts?

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Dear patient
You have got symptoms of plantar fascitis. It is a condition in which inflammation occurs at attachments of plantar fascia to heel bone. Occurs after middle age to elderly. You can feel pain in tip of heel on walking and pressing it. Wear soft heel cushion and sleepers. If this doesn't benefit local infiltration of injection depomedrol which helps to relieve inflammation and gives permanent relief. Do stretching excersise of foot before getting out of bed.
