What Causes Difficulty In Urinating?

Following spinal surgery on Monday, I am having trouble urinating. A very small stream to a dribble and not emptying bladder. Have urgent urge every few minutes with same small stream or dribble. Still feel I have to urinate when I finish. Do this about every 10 minutes. Painful and uncomfortable.

Urologist 's  Response
hello
Thanks for query .
You have not mentioned your age in your query .

If you are above 60 years old the cause of difficulty in passing urine is mainly due to Enlarged Prostate which gets precipitated after spinal surgery and leads to acute Retention of urine.Where as difficulty in passing urine in young patients is due to trivial injury to Spinal cord during surgery or due to edema of the spinal cord .

Please get catheterization done to drain the bladder with indwelling Foley catheter which should drain the bladder continuously for one week.

Take antibiotics like Ciprofloxacin twice daily .

If you are above 60 years take Tomsulosin once daily .

Remove the catheter after one weeks and if still unable to pass urine consult qualified Urologist for assessment and further treatment .
