Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Difficulty In Swallowing With Very Low Appetite?
My mother has no desire to eat. She can enjoy the taste of the food as she begins to eat and about half way through, it is as if something in her brain stops her and she cannot eat and even has some trouble swallowing. Whatever food is in her mouth will just kind of roll around and she just doesn't have the desire to swallow. Has anyone ever studied this phenomena? At this rate she will starve before anything else gets her. Is there a name for this. The supplement we have is very sweet and she will only drink it diluted with milk, cocoa. So she never drinks a whole one down. Perhaps you could refer me to someone who has done work in this area.
Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of difficulty in swallowing with very low appetite which could be due to granular pharyngitis and due to acid reflux disease. Tonsillitis can also cause such symptoms . I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper examination and to rule out other condition like sore throat.
Doctor may order blood test and throat swab test to confirm diagnosis. Doctor will also examine with laryngoscope.Doctor may prescribe antibiotics (amoxicillin, cephalexin or penicillin) course for around 10 days and vitamin C supplement for quick recovery.
Doctor may Refer you to gastroenterologist who may prescribe antacid and H2 blocker in case of acidic reflux disease. For now what you can do is gargling and rinsing with warm saline water ,drink plenty of fluids to keep yourself hydrated and take ibuprofen (if not allergic ) or acetaminophen for pain and inflammation. Avoid smoking.
Hope your concern has been resolved.
