What Causes Difficulty In Swallowing Along With Gag Reflex?

My boyfriend has been having trouble swallowing after having several tooth extractions and then following with a new full upper dental appliance. The appliance is not permanent, he takes it out each evening. He has an extremely sensitive gag reflex so it is especially difficult when he can t swallow immediately. He also produces quite a bit of saliva so he swallows often. He says that he feels like something is lodged in his throat, almost like he has mucus stuck there and he can t clear it. He has had the oral surgeon check his throat as well as a doctor and no one can see anything. I was hoping to get some insight...is this issue just adjustment to the new appliance. He is losing sleep so I worry.

Hi Dear ,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have swallowing along with gag reflex which seems to be due to post nasal drip, acid reflux, diverticula and bacterial infection. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to avoid eating spicy and heavy food specially at night , take light walk after every meal , take antacid after every meal and eat at least one hour before going to sleep. Doctor may order x-ray of digestive track , endoscopy of esophagus and ambulatory acidity test . Doctor may prescribe H2 blockers or proton pump inhibitor .Doctor may prescribe Glycopyrrolate. Doctor may also refer you to ENT specialist if he/she find problem to be related with upper respiratory tract infection.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
