What Causes Difficulty In Emptying The Bladder Of An Elderly Person?
My 93-year old father is having trouble urinating and cannot empty his bladder. It is extremely painful not to mention vey stressful. The hospital ER told him that there is no blockage and that everything seems normal except that the urine is mixed with semen (?). But the symptoms persist. He can only urinate in very small amounts. He is desperate and very depressed. He thinks the hospital mis-diagnosed him. I think he may have to go to a specialist and, in the meantime, have a catheter installed. He asked to try to find out a cure here in the USA, where I live (he lives in Brasil). Maybe he should consider coming here for treatment...What is your opinion Doctor? Thank you very much. --Art
It is quite possible that he has enlargement of his prostate. This is quite possible at his age.
The prostate tends to increase in size with age. This can be confirmed with an examination as well as blood test (psa). Prostatic disease can be associated with retrograde ejaculation (presence of semen in the sperm)
He should consider seeing an urologist. This is a doctor who specializes in conditions of the urinary tract.
I hope this helps
