What Causes Difficulty In Communication And Understanding?

A few years ago it seemed like my elderly mother began to hear the opposite (meaning) of everything I said. It has become much worse with time; and now she has begun saying the opposite of what she means. This can become quite confusing, especially when trying to keep things in a positive manner and not make her feel discouraged with herself. Is there a name for this...anything that can be done? Everything else seems perfectly normal.

Geriatrics Specialist 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows.
1. She is suffering from senile dementia, possibly Alzheimer's disease.
2. Behavior changes and deterioration in regular activities is usually seen.
3. Antipsychotic drugs are necessary to treat.
4. Meet your doctor and get referred to a psychiatrist. Early treatment is better and will slow further changes.
Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
