What Causes Difficulty In Breathing And Tightness In The Chest?

Hi, about 2 weeks ago i suddenly felt like I couldn t breathe, and my chest became quite tight. A few days later I was coughing up some phelm which was clear and my chest fees like there is a ton of pressure on it and I find it difficult to breathe out, been given antibiotics as the doctor thinks it s a chest infection or bronchitis. I can t sleep at night because it feels worse then and chest just feels uncomfortable like its blocked or something I don t know what else to do, and I have no problems with my heart or lungs.

Hello,

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I have read your question fully and understand your concerns.

I think you may have narrowing of your airways; this is causing you to have difficulty in breathing especially at night, and also to feel short of breath. Looks like the chest infection/bronchitis has triggered the narrowing of the airways.

You could try an inhaler – you could use either Ventolin (Salbutamol) inhaler 100 micrograms 1-2 puffs as needed up to 4 times a day, or you could try Atrovent inhaler day (Ipratropium bromide) 12.9 gms 1-2 puffs as needed up to four times a day. Even if this does not help you, your doctor can give you a short course of oral steroid (Prednisolone 30-40 mg once a day for 5-7 days). Do you smoke? If yes, it could be contributing to your symptoms too.

I wish your sister a speedy recovery.

I hope this answer has helped you.

Thank you
