What Causes Different Smelling Senses?

Recently, I have experienced a very strong sense of smell that seems to override my taste. Yesterday I was eating eggs, but smelled cinnamon. I smelled cigarette smoke(and beer) in my car where no one has ever smoked or consumed alcohol. I have always had a keen sense of smell, but this is different. Any ideas? I am 63 years old, therefore not pregnant.

Hi,

I understand your concern. What you are experiencing is parosmia (abnormal smelling in presence of another odor).

Change in smelling sense can be of 2 main reasons:
1. recent cold or upper respiratory tract infection that might have affected the nose and throat and related smelling cells
2. If no cold, then, neurological issues to rule out further by neurologist and ENT specialist.

Wish fast recovery.
