Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have had braces off for a few months. Over the last few days, I noticed a gap between a molar on the bottom right side. Food has gotten stuck easily and the gum bleeds very very badly. There is a permanent retainer so I m trying to figure out why the gap has opened up. It is a very small gap. Will I need braces again?
Well, if you have a permanent retainer then chances of opening up of gap are less. But you need to get checked to your Orthodontist if the retainer is appropriately placed or not. Secondly you need to get checked for any decay in your molar tooth that can be a cause of minor gap as well as food lodgement and gum bleeding.
My suggestion is to consult your orthodontist and get evaluated for the exact cause of the problem. If there is gap due to Orthodontic treatment then it can be corrected by removable appliances and proper retainers and you will not need braces to be done again. But getting checked early is better.
For now it will be better to eat from the other side, maintain a good oral hygiene, always clean your teeth after eating, do antiseptic mouthwash rinses, use orthodontic brushes to clean your teeth..
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Honey Arora, Dentist
