What Causes Delayed Periods?

Hi. My period in January started on the 1st. My period in February started on the 4th. It is March 9th and I still don t have my period. I have had protected (condom) sex with my boyfriend and he has pulled out before even finishing. I took a clear blue pregnancy on the 7th and it was negative. I m stressing out really bad.

Hello,

Thank you for your query. I understand your concerns.

Delayed periods could be caused by hormonal imbalance in the body. They can be also caused by stress (if you have been stressed out this month due to having had intercourse, then it could affect your periods). Sometimes there is no reason for delayed periods. A woman who has had perfectly regular periods in the past may have delayed periods for 2-3 months. This is normal too. The periods may become regular on their own.

I don’t think you are pregnant as you used condoms and also your urine pregnancy test is negative.

You can wait for another 1-2 weeks and repeat the pregnancy test. If negative and if your periods have not yet come, then you could see your doctor who may give you hormonal tablets (like norethisteron) to induce your periods. If your periods are persistently delayed then you may be started on the combined hormonal pill (like Microgynon/Femilon) for a few months to regularise the periods.

I hope this answer has helped you.
