What Causes Delay In Periods And Weight Gain Despite Having Negative UPT?

I am concerned about the possibility that I could be pregnant. I was on the depo shot for over a year until last May due to excessive menstrual bleeding. The excessive bleeding stopped at the beginning of January. My period was still irregular. I had unprotected sex twice near the end of January and the beginning of February. I had my last period for a few days in the beginning of February after the sex. I have taken two pregnancy tests over the course of the last 3 weeks and they both turned out to be negative. I have still not gotten my period, and every little thing is making me paranoid. I have subtly gained some weight, but I have also been eat a lot on my days off because I don t eat as much on days I work. I would really just like to hear your opinion on this. Thank you.

Hello,

I can understand your concern. As you have already taken 3 negative pregnancy tests, we should rule out pregnancy as a cause of absent menstruation.

There are many other reasons like polycystic ovaries, pramature ovarian follicle failure, thyroid dysfuction, infection of ovaries or uterus or any other cause causing hormonal imbalance. However, polycystic ovaries and thyroid disorder should be ruled out first as they are also related closely to weight gain.

I would advise you to visit a gynecologist for physical examination and investigations like blood tests to check hormonal levels and probably ultrasonography to check for cysts and ovulation status. Based on the results, you might be prescribed hormonal replacement therapy or treatment of associated condition.

I hope this information helps. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. Take care.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
