What Causes Dehydration After Taking Chlorthalidone?

Chlortalidone caused an extremely bad cramp and pain after 3 days. Diagnosis Is dehydration. However, water retention as well as high blood pressure are the reasons for the medicine. Do the two parts of the medicine have different times for effectiveness after starting? Will it balance after a while?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and welcome to 'Ask me Doctor' service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

chlothalidone is lower efficacy diuretic which usually not causes dehydration as caused by other high efficacy drug like furosemide.
can you please describe where actually water retention is there?
according to my opinion in such condition furosemide is used.

according to me bad cramps in your case is due to hypokalemia. go for serum electrolyte test and consult physician to change medication if required.

Hope I have answered your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards
Dr. Hiren
