What Causes Dark Brown Stool?

My stool has been very inconsistent for some time. Recently it has been more inconsistent than usual. Last week I felt very constipated but was only able to pass a few pencil thin dark brown stool. The last 2 days, I simply have a brown liquid that comes out. Also, I have had significant back pain while sleeping.
