What Causes Crusty Blisters On Face?

Hello, my father-in- law woke up this morning with these crusty blisters all over his face. And his right eye is almost swollen shut. The best way to describe the sores is the aftermath of a cold sore, when it turns into that brownish/yellowish crust. I have no clue what it is. He s trying to tell me that it s shingles, but I know that shingles are extremely painful. And he s not in pain. Do you have any idea what this could be? And, do you think that it s serious enough to go to the doctor? Thank You, Sanna

Hello. Thank you for writing to us

After going through your description the first thing that came to my mind if shingles!
The intensity of pain can vary in shingles and some patients don't seem to be in much discomfort.
Shingles usually presents as grouped, discrete, fluid filled lesions which are restricted to just one half of face (i.e a mid line cut off).
The diagnosis of shingles is clinically obvious and treatment is with Oral antivirals like acyclovir or valacyclovir.
Shingles on face can involve the eye as well.
Ocular complications like corneal involvement can lead to blindness and thus needs to be managed aggressively with oral steroids if necessary.
