What Causes Craving For Salt In A Diabetic?

Hi. I am a type 2 diabetic and also have hypertension. I ve noticed in the past year that about a week or 2 before my menstrual cycle, I crave salt a great deal. I ve noticed myself eating jars of pickles and olives and also anything (with salt) that will give me some form of satisfaction. After I get my menstrual cycle, the craving pretty much disappears. What causes this and is there anything I can do that will curve this craving?

Hello,
Welcome to HCM
I understand your concerns.Your symptoms are suggestive of that you are suffering from Premenstrual syndrome (PMS), also called premenstrual tension (PMT).

It is a collection of emotional symptoms, with or without physical symptoms, related to a woman's menstrual cycle.Excessive craving for any food items, anxiety, angerness are commonly seen in about a week to 10 days before menstruation.

So,do not worry.

Do regular aerobic exercises. Calcium supplementation (1200 mg/d) and vitamin E supplementation n the diet should be taken.

Hormonal contraception in the form of combined oral contraceptive pill and the contraceptive patch can be used.

Hope i have answered your query.
Thank you
