What Causes Cough And Fever While Suffering From Liver Dysfunction Be Treated?

Hi ,my father 55 years old had been diagnosed with chronic liver parenchymal disease as well as ascites, splenolmegaly and esophageal varices about 2 weeks ago. He underwent esophageal variceal ligation about a week ago. He has been on the following medications- Lactulose,Ciplar ,Rifaximin,Aldactone, Tab Sompraz and sucragard. He has been having cough and fever and weakness for the last 2 days. My questions are- 1. Should i worry about the recent cough and fever and what should i do for the same? 2. can the cough affect the esophageal banding? what to do if severe cough is preasent? 3.how should i proceed further for treatment of his liver disease? 4. which institutes should i refer to for cost effective treatment for the liver problem in india? 5. what is the probable prognosis in this case? please reply as i am deeply worried for his condition

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

In fact cough symptoms should be treated like any other patients rather more aggressively as infection are more serious in such patient. An X-ray should be done to know cause of cough. Cough suppressant may be given however those that have sedation should be avoided.
Generally treatment is supportive at this moment like diuretics and avoiding salt. Liver transplant is the only potential curative option. Prognosis without transplant is not good.

Hope I have answered your query.
