What Causes Cough And Congestion Along With Runny Nose Inspite Of Taking Azithromycin?

I have had a persistent cough for last 7 days. Went to doctor after 3 days, no pneumonia, diagnosed a cold and prescribed Azithromycin, taking last one today. Still have persistent cough, no other cold-like symptoms like stuffy head or runny nose or fever. Started to bring up a little dark brown phlegm about 3 days ago. Will probably go back to doctor in a day or two if no improvement. Your thoughts would be appreciated?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* As per my clinical experience, the runny nose and cough despite taking azithromycin may be related to:
- Viral infection underlying which may not respond to antibiotic
- Drug resistant bacteria causing respiratory congestion
- Ongoing exposure to atmospheric dust or pollen responsible for the congestion episode
- Current active, heavy smoking
- Low immunity levels
- Uncontrolled diabetes
- Lower respirator tract infection needing a higher molecule class of antibiotics as ceftriaxone or others.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Take care.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
