What Causes Cough And Chest Congestion Post Cardioversion?

I am a 60 year old female who had a cardioversion yesterday. I have atrial fib and 3 years ago had an ablation and cardioversion. Today I started coughing and feel like I have congestion in my chest. Is this normal or something I need to let my cardiologist know about?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The cough and chest congestion post cardioversion can be related to:
- Residual effect of anesthetic drug (if injected or inhaled during the procedure)
- Side effect of certain medications as ACE inhibitors or else
- Viral congestion irrespective of above

It is best recommended to inform your treating cardiologist for the same for further course of action. Till the time being approach, deep breathing exercises and gargles with salted lukewarm water will help best way for partial relief.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
