What Causes Cough Along With Fever And Body Ache?

I have been sick for two weeks with coughing, fever, aches and went to urgent care yesterday hoping to get an antibiotic. After giving me a chest x-ray they said my lungs were clear but gave me paperwork to go to the nearest ER to rule out PE sepsis.
I was chilling and had my daughter take me home. I still feel terrible but don't want to go to ER when I probably just need antibiotics. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for trusting Healthcaremagic!
I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns.

All the symptoms you have mentioned suggestive of ARI (Acute respiratory tract infection) it could be a viral infection with superimposed bacterial one.
I suggest you to consult a general physician and get the following things done:-
1.A short course of antibiotics for five to seven days may be started emperically.
2.You can take a course of flu medicines like oseltamivir.
3.Get basic blood and urine investigations done.
4.A peripheral smear to rule out malaria and widal test to rule out typhoid might be needed.
5.You can take acetaminophen for pain and fever.
6.Antihistamines and nasal decongestants would provide symptomatic relief.
7.Do warm saline gargles and gargling with a chlorhexidine containing mouth wash.
Most cases improve with timely treatment and complications are very unlikely .
Hope I have answered your query.
Wishing you good health.

Regards.
Dr.Shinas Hussain
