What Causes Coronary Artery Disease?

I am 57 year old male who keeps himself in good shape through running, walking, and weightlifting and stretching. I have cut out trans fats, high fructose corn syrup. My blood pressure is good along with my lipid profile. My EKG shows heart output that rivals a young Olympic athlete. I do not smoke or drink. I take 100 mg of CoQ10 per day along with fish oil, L-Carnitine, Magnesium, D-Ribose, Vitamin D3 and recently Vitamin K2 as menaquinone MK7. I use a lot of Olive Oil and have taken Crestor for over a decade. Despite all of my proactive efforts after reporting some left shoulder discomfort I was diagnosed with narrowing of the coronary arteries requiring one stent in the mid right CA along with the Anti Platelet medicine Brilinta. At the conclusion of the procedure my ejection fraction was 65. Although my blood flow has been restored and I feel much less fatigue, is there any way that I can reverse the narrowing and calcification as a stent does not address the underlying condition that created the blockage?

Hi,

Stents only open the narrowed vessels and does not hit the primary cause of ischemic heart disease. However the cause of ischemic heart disease is not a simple question and answer.

In fact, there is no cause and we only know about the risks that may increase the chances of the having atherosclerosis (narrowing of vessel). These risks are divided into two main groups regarding management.

1. Modifiable risks: we can modify and correct them .These include blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, obesity, smoking, and few more of minor importance.

2. Nonmodifiable: we can't modify them, like family history, genetics, increasing age, male sex.

So you also need to work on the modifiable risks to decrease them to the minimum level; unfortunately currently we are helpless regarding the non modifiable.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
