What Causes Constipation And Abdominal Bloating While Suffering From Diverticulosis?

I ve been diagnosed with diverticulosis. Haven t had an episode of diverticulitis in years. My last colonoscopy was in 2014 and was normal and I was told to come back in 2024 for another. For the last six months or so I ve had a problem with constipation and bloating. If I don t have a bowed movement daily, I become constipated. For example, I know that if I don t have a bowel movement today, I probably won t have one the next day or the day after that. I take laxatives about 3 times a month. When I m bloated I look like I m 6 MOS. pregnant. Then a day or two later that subsides. Any idea what might be going on?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank You for the query at HCM

The most common reason for constipation is dietary habits. Here are few things you can try to help relieve constipation
- drink plenty of fluids
- Avoid coffee
- diet rich in fiber like fruits and vegetables
- diet rich in probiotics like yogurt
- avoid coffee and other caffeinated drinks
- bulk forming laxative like psyllium
-Daily exercising
-If you are diabetic, strict control of blood sugar levels is also important

Since your colonoscopy was normal, there is nothing concerning. Try the lifestyle changes I mentioned above and see if it helps.

Hope I was able to help you
