What Causes Constant Sweating And Shivering With Vomiting?

Hi Dr. Mintz, my husband is suffering from constant sweating, shivering, no fever, vomiting episodes where he cannot stop. he was a the hospital Friday and Saturday, has had xray, they referred us to a specialist and gave him suppositories and promethazine, ondansetron, and omeprazole, the pills have been vomited up but I was able to get him to put the promethazine under his tongue, so he has some of that plus one suppository. he has finally stopped vomiting, but is still profusely sweating with shivering/chills. in the hospital, he had a high white blood count. pls advise.

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history about your husband suffering from constant sweating, shivering, without fever but have vomiting, went to hospital and X-ray was taken and given Promethazine, Ondansetron, Omeprazole. He vomited the medicines but since promethazine was given under the tongue, vomiting improved. Suppository is passed and has helped. But the profuse sweating and shivering/chills continue with high white cell count.
The most probable cause of no fever but shivering going on along with vomiting and high white cell counts indicate gram negative infection.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Blood culture and sensitivity helps to identify the organism.
Also needed is ultrasonography for any occult abscess, X-ray of the lungs and tests of urine and stool are also important to get a probable cause and get started with proper medication particularly covering Gram negative infection.
Surgical intervention may be required if there is an abscess in liver or so.
Also needed is supportive therapy.
