What Causes Constant Pain Around The Navel In A Child?

My son is 9 years old and has had abdominal pain around his belly button for 5 days, ranging from none to severe enough to cry. We did a rapid strep and it was negative. Went to ER last night and the WBC was normal as well as the inflammation. My son felt very good after the blood draw and did ok through the day, but now is hurting again. He has no fever, no vomiting or nausea, though he was nauseous 2 days ago. His temp is low and he is lethargic with pale skin. I am concerned about the appendix, but I don t know. Should I go back to ER tonight? His pediatrician is gone until Monday, so if I take him to a doctor during the day, it will be one he has not seen.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is understandable to be concerned especially since the pain can sometimes be severe.

The normal WBC and ESR make infection unlikely since both of these would normally be increased if any infection, such as appendicitis, was present.

Fever would also normally accompany infection unless the immune system is suppressed (eg diabetes, use of steroids eg in asthma, other immune suppressing meds).

Pain around the umbilicus is sometimes related to bowel movements . He may need imaging to take a look.

I hope this helps
