What Causes Constant Need To Burp?

I am a 57 year old female and have been having the feeling like I need to burp, but am not able to. Do you have any idea what may be causing this? My nurse friend told me to drink some carbonated soda, which I just did. It helped but I still feel the need to burp. Thank you

Dear mam,

Thanks for your query in HCM. I am Dr. Aliem, and I am pleased to answer your query.

Frequent burping or a sensation to do so indicates that you have Gastro Esophageal Reflux. This usually settles on its own in most individuals. Taking carbonated drinks provide only a momentary relief. They do not help in the long run. They may aggravate Reflux by causing distension of stomach.

I suggest you to take 2 tea spoons (10 ml) of Antacid gel- 3 times daily and at bed time. Avoid spicy or oily foods/tea/coffee/alcohol/chocolates. Avoid smoking. Don't lie down for atleast 30 mins after meals.

If the problem persists or worsens, please consult your physician as early as possible. He may order an ECG for you, since milder forms of coronary artery disease (heart attack) may present with similar symptoms.

Hope this helps. Please feel free to ask further queries if any.
