What Causes Constant Hearing Of Creaking Sound In Ears?

Hi, I have a weird creaking type noise in my left ear. It sounds like someone walking over noisy floorboards. It's been going on for a couple of months now on and off. I seem to notice it more when I'm talking or moving my jaw in any way. What could this be?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that the creaking sound in left ear that appears on and off and more while talking or moving the jaw seems to be due to disorders associated with the jaw joint also known as Temporomandibular Joint Disorder commonly referred to as TMJ or TMD..

It can occur due to causes like
-Teeth grinding or Bruxism.
-Teeth clenching habit.
-Jaw trauma leading to displacement of the articular disc that is present as a soft cushion between the bony ends of the jaw joint..
-Arthritic changes in the jaw joint..

I would suggest you to consult an Oral Physician or an Oral Surgeon and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like Orthopantomogram can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..

You can be advised treatments like Physiotherapy, mouth guards tthat has to be placed at night along with it anti anxiety medication to control stress and anxiety that can cause teeth clenching.

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. You have symptoms of constant hearing of creaking sound in ears is due to eustachian tube dysfunction. In this condition eustachian tube (tube which connect upper throat to middle ear and balance pressure of middle ear) get blocked due to various conditions like :-
- Common cold , sinus ,ear or throat infection.
- Allergy .
- Air travel .
- Sometimes due to fluid present in ear.

When we do opening and closing of mouth the blocked tube open and then block again which produces sound. Symptoms go away in few days without treatment or by blowing air after deep breath with closed mouth and nostrils . If symptoms persist then consult ENT specialist for proper diagnosis and to rule out conditions like middle ear infection . Doctor may prescribe decongestants , anti histamine nasal sprays or antibiotics for a week.Doctor may implant pressure equalizer tube of give small incision on ear drum.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
