my husband, 53 yrs old, has had diarrhea for 14 days. He has been having mucous in his stools. He does not have stomach pain, vomiting, fever or other flu like symptoms. He recently had a colonoscopy with a clean bill of health. He is not loosing weight and can eat whatever he wants. He did submit samples to be tested. Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Diarrhea can be due to different causes but the most common reason for acute diarrhea (not long term) is infection.

Viral or bacterial infection of the gastrointestinal tract can result in diarrhea.

The most important aspect of treatment would be fluid management. This means replacing the fluids loss with diarrhea.
The best fluids would be the oral rehydration fluids or sport drinks such as gatorade which would also give fluids and electrolytes.

Probiotics would also help.

Medications such as lomotil or peptobismol may help reduce the diarrhea.

I hope this helps
