What Causes Constant Burping After Taking Lisinopril?

I started taking lisinopril 10 mg for hbp in August. Shortly thereafter the constant burping began. It often keeps me from sleeping at night, but also occurs at all hours throughout the day / night. I also have a phlegmy cough for the last month, but usually it s not productive. Any suggestions?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.
I carefully read your questions and understand your concern.
Lisinopril is a great medication for hypertension and has few side effects and among them is nausea and cough but is not common to cause burping. Even though burping started the same time with lisinopril use it does not necessarily mean they are related or lisinopril causes it. There are some other causes of burping and some things that can be done to help with that:
1. make sure you have frequent small amount of food; take 5 small meals instead of 3 big meals
2. do not have dinner later than 3 hours before bed
3. avoid liquids and sparkling drinks 3-4 hours before bed
4. avoid coffee, alcohol and food that you might have noticed makes the burping worse
5. put brick under the legs of the bed at the side of the head to lift the bed's head a little so when you sleep you are not too flat
6. avoid fried food or very spicy ones
7. make sure you loose some weight if you have a BMI over 25
8. if you do not improve or you still think that lisinopril is the cause of the burping, even though it is rare to cause it, it does not mean it never happens. I would recommend in this case to speak with you doctor on the possibility of substituting lisinorpil with some other blood pressure medications. it is very important that we do not stop blood pressure medications without the advise of the doctor unless you are having sever allergy to them.

Hope this is helpful and answers to your question.

Best regards

Dr Antoneta
