What Causes Chronic Vomiting While Suffering From Bronchitis?

My son is having difficulty keeping food down after eating which is the main problem right now. He has been sick since 3rd week in January with bronchitis brought on my a severe flu/virus............he also has severe anxiety but is not on meds for this at present moment. He is on medication for ADHD he takes focalin for this. The doctor prescribed an an acid reflex med for him today (Prilosec) and ordered an upper GI xray to see if what was going on..............again the gagging and anxiety it brings is causing him not to be able to eat...is there something he can do to help him get food down until the xray? simple things like orajel or throat spray to numb the area, would that help or make worse? should we be worried it is something worse & needs to be sooner than march 14th?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Sometimes bronchitis and pneumonia affecting the lower lobe of the lungs are associated with gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea and vomiting.

Once lung infection is treated, then everything will settle. On the other side, medications used to treat lung infection might cause stomach issues like acid reflux or gastritis.

Prisolec will help but needs at least 2 weeks to take effect. Antacids after meals will reduce acidity faster although shorter in time. Give probiotics to stabilize intestinal flora already altered from antibiotics. If still no improvement, then go to ER for immediate evaluation and treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
