What Causes Chronic Knee Pain With History Of Undergoing Leg Surgery?

Hi, my husband had surgery on his leg about 8 years ago and had to have a titanium rod put in running from his ankle to his knee. He s been having knee pain on and off for a couple years. Lately, last couple weeks its been more chronic and his veins arevreally buldging out. Could this be a blood clot?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your husband is suffering from chronic knee pain. He has history of having titanium rod implant put 8 years ago. He is experiencing post operative complications, you are suggested to get an appointment from his surgeon for re-examination. Such symptoms arise commonly due to infection at the site of implant, a sign that the nerves or surrounding blood vessels may have been damaged, varicose veins, loosening of the implant, blood clots, etc.

Pain may be due to edema, applying an ice pack over the skin of the affected area helps to cool down the bone in order to suppress heat generation and inflammatory edema. Symptoms may be indicative of pressure necrosis of the surrounding bone & the patient may complain of continuous pain not relieved by analgesics, for weeks after the surgery. Get him clinically examined by his surgeon, get all necessary tests, investigations done. He will be treated accordingly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
