What Causes Chronic Crying In Elderly?

My mother is 81 yrs old, diabetic, and has had recent hip surgery. She has recently started crying whenever having conversations, even the most simple conversations bring on the tears. When you ask her about it she says she doesn t know why and it goes away as easily as it comes on. Is this a serious concern?

Hello,
Thank your for asking at HCM.
I carefully read your question and understand your concern.
It is normal that faced with a major surgery patients get scared and emotional. If your grandmother had a recent hip surgery this is a common cause of pain and distress and might effect her emotions. Also not being able to move as freely can make her more effected.
There are several problems that might happen in elderly and anxiety on their function and need for assistance in the future and availability of that assistance in case of need get very prominent.
Sometimes it might go up to depression. it is very important that she feels loved and cared for and that there is help in case she needs it. Encouragement and care are very important. She needs to be encouraged to speak openly on her concerns and patiently be heard when she does speak them.
Avoid coffee and other drinks that contain caffeine. Smoking and alcohol are not a help either. She needs to be sent for walks as possible.
Make sure she has good pain control also. it is vital to control her pain as it effects her and might be a cause of anxiety.
If symptoms continue even though she has good support and pain control than she will need to speak with her doctor and medications for anxiety or depression might be considered if the doctor thinks she has any of those.
Hope this is helpful and answers to your question
