What Causes Chronic Cough?

Hello. I ve been coughing for quite some time. I did not address this issue to my doctor. Sometimes it is dry cough, sometimes I cough until mucus comes out. I get the constant need to clear my throat. Sometimes little itch triggers my cough. What could be cause of my cough? Thank you

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You have not mentioned your age. Anyhow long-term (chronic) cough can be because of the conditions like asthma or some chronic infections like tuberculosis.

If it is mainly sneezing rather than coughing, this may be because of allergic rhinitis in atopy. Itching can point to this cause.

I advise you to see your doctor for a chest examination, basic blood test, and a chest x ray. Meanwhile, keep your room dust and smoke free. Avoid smoking.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam
