Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
The last 2 -3 weeks I seem to be coughing up a small amount of white phlegm multiple times during the day. Routinely, I have congestion and had to clear my nose for quite some time the first hour after my morning shower just about everyday. I have never smoked but have often had congestion from allergies which seem to have gotten more prevalent as I age. I am 59 overweight but healthy and active. This coughing has not seemed to diminish my activity or exercise regime.
Dear:thanks for using HCM . I reviewed your question in detail and will give you my medical advise. First of all, the most common cause of cough is postnasal drip from sinus congestion ,similar to what you are describing. Other reason is gastroesophageal reflux which is worse in patients that are overweight. I suggest you to eat healthy food, avoid alcohol, spicy and things that can stimulate acid production. You should sleep with the head elevated and do not go to bed just when finished eating, just wait at least 2 hrs to go. If you have a lot of sinus congestion, you can use saline water nasal lavage to help to decrease that. I hope my advise has been helpful Dr.Sara
