What Causes Chronic Cough And Green Phlegm?

I was recently referred to a urologist due to my having blood in my urine during a routine exam. Today I had my CT scan and received the results. All seems well except for a 0.9cm cyst on my right kidney and a 0.5cm cyst on my left. But the thing that scares me is that they saw a Reticular opacity in the right lower lobe. The results said it likely represents localized infectious or inflammatory process. My heart is normal in size, without pericardial effusion. Here s my concern. I m a 46 year old smoker. I have smoked for the past 20 years (about a half pack a day). I have had a cough for the past 6 weeks. I cough green phlegm in the morning, then during the day I don t cough much, but at night it gets a little worse. It s actually gotten better than it was a few weeks ago. My question is, do reticular opacities lean more towards infections or do they point more towards a tumor considering my history?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your history you may have psuedomonas infection. As you are a smoker there are chances of broncheiactasis or COPD leading to chronic cough. There are no chances of cancer if you don't have blood in your sputum or history of weight loss. And decreased appetite.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
