What Causes Chronic Cough Along With Sinus Inflammation And Congestion?

I have a regular doctor for the past month I have had a chronic cough with minimal sputum production, my sinuses feel inflamed with increased congestion, when I cough the mucus just reaches the back of my throat and will not move up or down and efforts to expectorate are unsuccessful, eventually I feel I need to blow my nose and that eliminates the feeling in the back of my throat. some days are worse than others. my nose, throat and trachea feel dry and irritated all the time, this does not pose a problem during sleep, but I take zolpidem at bedtime. I am a smoker. should I contact my doctor or wait for my regular appointment in juhw

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of chronic cough along with sinus inflammation and congestion which is due to upper respiratory tract infection leading to bronchitis/ granular pharyngitis. Need not to worry. Also drink green tea with ginger thrice a day and avoid bending forward. Avoid use of sharp and spicy food substances , apply dry warm compresses on external ear. Avoid cold carbonated beverages. I would suggest you to start with course of antibiotics and anti inflammatory medications. You should do warm saline gargles and take steam twice a day. Your symptoms will resolve in 1 week. if symptoms keeps on persisting you should consult ENT specialist and take proper treatment. You should get X-ray chest done along with pulmonary function tests. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics ( amoxicillin or penicillin ) at least for 5 days along with decongestant.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Get Well Soon.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
