What Causes Chronic Constipation And Blood In The Stool?

My boyfriend suffers from severe constipation. Last night he had diarrhea that hurt so bad he broke into a cold sweat and was almost passing out. Today he has been pooping blood. About five times today. And a cramps feeling. The pain was and is high up on his left side.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. Your symptoms could be due to Fecoliths obstruction, inadequate fiber intake, daibetes, hypothyroidism, irritable bowel syndrome. The more the bowel is not emptied the more difficult it becomes to evacuate as the liquid content of the stool is reabsorbed. The stool becomes hard and this hard stuff goes on accumulating in the gut cause bleeding due to friction.

I would suggest to consult the gastroenterologist and undergo stool examination, ultrasound scan of abdomen, colonic transit studies, defecography and colonoscopy examination. Following advice will help you:

- Glycerine enema for immediate relief
- Syrup Lactulose can be taken
- Tablet dicyclomine
- Tab bisacodyl at bedtime can useful
- Bulking agents like isabgol husk
- Lifestyle changes: Drink one spoon of honey in warm water daily in morning before the bowel movement.

Eat high fiber diet. Every meal should have salads and fruits with skin. Drink 2 to 4 litres of water daily. Daily evening and morning walk for 30 to 45 minutes to regularize the bowel movement. Take more fruits and green leafy vegetables in the diet.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Best regards,
Dr. Sagar
