What Causes Choking And Difficulty In Swallowing Food?

I went and had an upper GI and the doctor said that my esophagus was curved instead of straight. I have been feeling like I was choking and my food was not swallowing sometimes. He stated that my esophabus was inflamed and he had to open it up. My dad had this problem. I have had to have it done before and also had some polyps removed. I am 66 years old. What causes this and is it something they can fix.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have feeling of choking and difficulty in swallowing food which will cause accumulation of bacteria and other microorganisms in that area. It could be due to gastroesophageal reflux disease. Do warm saline gargles. You should take small meals and avoid large meals. If condition doesn't get better in 2-3 days then consult ENT specialist also for proper diagnosis and go for swab test. Go for sputum test as well if required and start treatment as per proper diagnosis. Sip warm water after every few minutes and eat 1-2 banana. Doctor may also examine with laryngoscope or endoscopy and may remove foreign particle with the help of surgery . Take mucolytic agent like ambroxol or decongestants. If condition doesn't get well then go for polyp removal and again consult gastroenterologist. Avoid hot, sharp , spicy food substances and carbonated beverages.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
